DEEDS OF THE HEART

These are some of the deeds of the heart which are mentioned in the Qur’aan:

1. Awe, Reverence:

Has not the time come for the hearts of those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah – Islamic Monotheism) to be affected (Takhsha’) by Allah’s Reminder (this Qur’an), and that which has been revealed of the truth, lest they become as those who received the Scripture [the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] before (i.e. Jews and Christians), and the term was prolonged for them and so their hearts were hardened? And many of them were Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah). (Al-Hadeed 16)

On the authority of Zayd ibn Arqam (رضي الله عنه) that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم ) used to say, “O Allah, I seek refuge in you from knowledge which does not benefit, from a heart which does not feel humble, from a soul that does not feel contented and from an invocation that is not answered.” (Muslim)

2. Softness:

Allah has sent down the best statement, a Book (this Qur’an), its parts resembling each other in goodness and truth, oft-repeated. The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver from it (when they recite it or hear it). Then their skin and their heart soften to the remembrance of Allah. That is the guidance of Allah.. He Guides therewith whom He pleases and whomever Allah sends astray, for him there is no guide. (Al-Zumar 23)

Abu Hurayra (رضي الله عنه) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: “The people of Yemen have come to you. They are tender-hearted and more delicate of soul. The capacity to understand (fiqh) is of the Yemenis and wisdom is that of the Yemenis.” (Muslim)

3. Humbleness:

And that those who have been given knowledge may know that it (this Qur’an) is the truth from your Lord, and that they may believe therein, and their hearts may submit to it with humility. And verily, Allah is the Guide of those who believe, to the Straight Path. (Al-Hajj 54)

4. Turning over:

Men whom neither trade nor sale diverts them from the Remembrance of Allah (with heart and tongue), nor from performing As-Salat (Iqamat-as- Salat), nor from giving the Zakat. They fear a Day when hearts and eyes will be overturned (from the horror of the torment of the Day of Resurrection). (Al-Nur 37)

‘Abdullah b. ‘Amr b. al-’Aas (رضي الله عنه) reported that he heard Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) as saying: Verily, the hearts of all the sons of Adam are between the two fingers out of the fingers of the Compassionate Lord as one heart. He turns that to any (direction) He likes. Then Allahs Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: 0 Allah, the Turner of the hearts, turn our hearts to Thine obedience. (Muslim)

Anas ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه) narrated:

Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) used to say quite frequently: O Turner of the heart, keep me steadfast in your religion. I said: Allah’s Apostle, we do affirm faith in you and in that which you have been sent with. (Despite this) you entertain fear about us. Whereupon he said: Yes. Verily the hearts are between two Fingers from the Fingers of Allah and He turns them as He likes. (Al-Tirmidhi and graded Sahih by Albani)

5. Soundness:

The Day when there will not benefit [anyone] wealth or children.

But only one who comes to Allah with a sound heart. (Al-Shu’araa’ 88-89)

6. Fear:

The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, feel a fear in their hearts and when His Verses (this Qur’an) are recited unto them, they (i.e. the Verses) increase their Faith; and they put their trust in their Lord (Alone); (Al-Anfaal 2)

Irbaad bin Saariya (رضي الله عنه) narrates: “Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) preached to us one day after Fajar with utmost eloquence which caused the eyes to tear and the hearts to tremble. A man then said: “Definitely this is the advice of a person bidding farewell, hence what do you emphatically command us with O Messenger of Allah? He (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: “I emphatically command you with the fear of Allah and the listening and obedience even (if your leader be) an Abyssinian slave. Verily who lives from amongst you will observe such dissension. Save yourself from newly invented matters because it is definitely misguidance. Whosoever reaches that era from amongst you then my Sunnah and Sunnah of the rightly guided Khulafa is mandatory upon him. Bite upon it (the Sunnah) with the molars. (Ahmad graded Sahih by Albani in Irwaa’)

7. Piety:

Thus it is [what has been mentioned in the above said Verses (27, 28, 29, 30, 31) is an obligation that mankind owes to Allah]. And whosoever honours the Symbols of Allah, then it is truly from the piety of the heart. (Al-Hajj 32)
8. Tranquility:

Those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah – Islamic Monotheism), and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah, Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest. (Al-Ra’d 28)

9. Turning to Allah in Repentance:

(It will be said): “This is what you were promised, – (it is) for those oft-returning (to Allah) in sincere repentance, and those who preserve their covenant with Allah (by obeying Him in all what He has ordered, and worship none but Allah Alone, i.e. follow Allah’s Religion, Islamic Monotheism).

Who feared the Most Beneficent (Allah) in the Ghaib (unseen): (i.e. in this worldly life before seeing and meeting Him), and brought a heart turned in repentance (to Him – and absolutely free from each and every kind of polytheism). (Qaaf 32-33)
10. Hardness:

Which is harshness, rigidity, roughness and that is when softness, mercy and humility leaves the heart.

That He (Allah) may make what is thrown in by Shaitan (Satan) a trial for those in whose hearts is a disease (of hypocrisy and disbelief) and whose hearts are hardened. And certainly, the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.) are in an opposition far-off (from the truth against Allah’s Messenger and the believers). (Al-Hajj 53)

Is he whose breast Allah has opened to Islam, so that he is in light from His Lord (as he who is non-Muslim)? So, woe to those whose hearts are hardened against remembrance of Allah! They are in plain error! (Al-Zumar 22)

See Also Al-Baqarah 74, Al-Maaidah 13, Al-An’aam 43, Al-Hadeed 16.

Ibn ‘Umar (رضي الله عنه) said that Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم ) said: “Do not talk for long without remembering Allah, for talking much without remembering Allah is hardness of the heart. The most distant among man from Allah swt is one with a hardened heart.” (Tirmidhi and graded sahih by albani)

11. Deviation:

That is inclining towards astray ness after guidance, which is from the disease of the heart.

So as for those in whose hearts there is a deviation (from the truth) they follow that which is not entirely clear thereof, (Aal Imran 7)

Allah has forgiven the Prophet (SAW), the Muhajirun (Muslim emigrants who left their homes and came to Al-Madinah) and the Ansar (Muslims of Al-Madinah) who followed him (Muhammad SAW) in the time of distress (Tabuk expedition, etc.), after the hearts of a party of them had nearly deviated (from the Right Path), but He accepted their repentance. Certainly, He is unto them full of Kindness, Most Merciful. (Al-Tawbah 117)

So when they turned away (from the Path of Allah), Allah turned their hearts away (from the Right Path). (Al-Saff 5)

12. Doubt:

The building which they built will never cease to be a cause of hypocrisy and doubt in their hearts, unless their hearts are cut to pieces. (i.e. till they die). And Allah is All- Knowing, All-Wise. (Al-Tawbah 110)

It is only those who believe not in Allah and the Last Day and whose hearts are in doubt that ask your leave (to be exempted from Jihad). So in their doubts they waver. (Al-Tawbah 45)

Is there a disease in their hearts? Or do they doubt or fear lest Allah and His Messenger (SAW) should wrong them in judgement. Nay, it is they themselves who are the Zalimun (polytheists, hypocrites and wrong-doers, etc.). (Al-Nur 50)

13. Denial/Rufusal:

How [can there be a treaty] while, if they gain dominance over you, they do not observe concerning you any pact of kinship or covenant of protection? They satisfy you with their mouths, but their hearts refuse [compliance], and most of them are defiantly disobedient. (Al-Tawbah 8)

14. Roughness:

And by the Mercy of Allah, you dealt with them gently.. And had you been severe and harsh-hearted, they would have broken away from about you; so pass over (their faults), and ask (Allah’s) Forgiveness for them; and consult them in the affairs. Then when you have taken a decision, put your trust in Allah, certainly, Allah loves those who put their trust (in Him). (Aal Imran 159)

15. Rage/Anger:

and heal the breasts of a believing people

And remove the anger of their (believers’) hearts (Al-Tawbah 14-15)

16. Anxiety/Agitation:

(Some) hearts that Day will shake with fear and anxiety. (Al-Naazi’aat 8)

17. Zealotry:

Which is strong anger when it becomes a lot, its called ‘’Hamiyya’’ if its on Baatil, and if its on Haq its called ‘’Ghairah’’.

When those who disbelieve had put in their hearts pride and haughtiness the pride and haughtiness of the time of ignorance (Al-Fath 26)

18. Division/Disunion:

You would think they were united, but their hearts are divided (Al-Hashr 14)
19. Unity:

and remember Allah’s Favour on you, for you were enemies one to another but He joined your hearts together, so that, by His Grace, you became brethren (in Islamic Faith), (Aal Imran 103)

And He has united their (i.e. believers’) hearts. If you had spent all that is in the earth, you could not have united their hearts, but Allah has united them. Certainly He is All- Mighty, All-Wise. (Al-Anfaal 63)

Also see Al-Tawbah 60

20. Grudge/Spite:

And those who came after them say: “Our Lord! Forgive us and our brethren who have preceded us in Faith, and put not in our hearts any hatred against those who have believed. Our Lord! You are indeed full of kindness, Most Merciful. (Al-Hashr 10)

21. Absorbing

They said, “We have heard and disobeyed.” And their hearts absorbed (the worship of) the calf because of their disbelief. Say: “Worst indeed is that which your faith enjoins on you if you are believers.” (Al-Baqarah 93)

Hudhayfah (رضي الله عنه) said i heard Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم ) saying:
The Fitan (trials, tests) are offered to the hearts, just as the straws that are sewn into a woven mat, one after another. Any heart that accepts the Fitan, then a black dot will be engraved on it. Any heart that rejects the Fitan, then a white dot will be engraved on it. The hearts will therefore become two categories: white, just like the barren rock; no Fitnah shall ever harm this category as long as the heavens and earth still exist. Another category is black, just as the cup that is turned upside down, for this heart does not recognize righteousness or renounce evil. (Muslim)

22. Resemblance:

And those who have no knowledge say: “Why does not Allah speak to us (face to face) or why does not a sign come to us?” So said the people before them words of similar import. Their hearts are alike, We have indeed made plain the signs for people who believe with certainty. (Al-Baqarah 118)

23. Disgust:

And when Allah Alone is mentioned, the hearts of those who believe not in the Hereafter are filled with disgust (from the Oneness of Allah and when those (whom they obey or worship) besides Him [like all false deities other than Allah, it may be a Messenger like 'Iesa (Jesus) - son of Maryam (Mary), 'Uzair (Ezra), an angel, a pious man, a jinn, or any other creature even idols, graves of religious people, saints, priests, monks, etc.] are mentioned, behold, they rejoice! (Al-Zumar 45)

24. Blindness:

Have they not travelled through the land, and have they hearts wherewith to understand and ears wherewith to hear? Verily, it is not the eyes that grow blind, but it is the hearts which are in the breasts that grow blind. (Al-Hajj 46)

25. Heedlessness:

and obey not him whose heart We have made heedless of Our Remembrance, one who follows his own lusts and whose affair (deeds) has been lost. (Al-Kahf 28)

Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) narrated that Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم ) said, “Invoke Allah while you are certain to be answered and know that Allah does not answer a Du’a from a heart which is inattentive and unmindful” (Tirmidhi, graded hasan by Albani).

26. Mercy:

And We ordained in the hearts of those who followed him, compassion and mercy. (Al-Hadeed 27)

Usamah bin Zaid (رضي الله عنه) reported: A grandson (child of the daughter) of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) was presented to him while the child was at his last breath. Tears began to flow from the eyes of the Messenger of Allah Sa`d said to him: “What is this, O Messenger of Allah?” He (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, “It is mercy which Allah has placed in the hearts of his salves. Allah bestows His Mercy on the merciful among His slaves.”
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

”So when you see someone who has been afflicted with a calamity in head brains or body and you wept out of mercy, then this evidence that Allah Ta’ala has put in your heart mercy, and to whomever Allah puts mercy in his heart will be from the merciful whom will Allah have mercy upon.”
(Sharh Riyaadh Al-Saaliheen, ibn ‘Uthaymeen)

27. Calmness:

He it is Who sent down As-Sakinah (calmness and tranquillity) into the hearts of the believers, that they may grow more in Faith along with their (present) Faith. (Al-Fath 4)

Indeed, Allah was pleased with the believers when they gave their Bai’a (pledge) to you (O Muhammad SAW) under the tree, He knew what was in their hearts, and He sent down As-Sakinah (calmness and tranquillity) upon them, and He rewarded them with a near victory, (Al-Fath 18)

When those who disbelieve had put in their hearts pride and haughtiness the pride and haughtiness of the time of ignorance, then Allah sent down His Sakinah (calmness and tranquillity) upon His Messenger ( SAW) and upon the believers, and made them stick to the word of piety (i.e. none has the right to be worshipped but Allah), and they were well entitled to it and worthy of it. And Allah is the All-Knower of everything. (Al-Fath 26)

28. Denial/Refusal:

But for those who believe not in the Hereafter, their hearts deny (the faith in the Oneness of Allah), and they are proud. (Al-Nahl 22)

29. Amusement:

Which is heedlessness and turning away,

With their hearts occupied (with evil things) those who do wrong, conceal their private counsels, (Al-Anbiyaa’ 3)

30. Purification:

Those are the ones whose hearts Allah does not want to purify (from disbelief and hypocrisy); for them there is a disgrace in this world, and in the Hereafter a great torment. (Al-Maaidah 41)

And when you ask (his wives) for anything you want, ask them from behind a screen, that is purer for your hearts and for their hearts. (Al-Ahzaab 53)

31. Sinful:

And conceal not the evidence for he, who hides it, surely his heart is sinful, (Al-Baqarah 283)

32. Cut to pieces:

A heart which is cut off due to grief, sorrow and regret,

The building which they built will never cease to be a cause of hypocrisy and doubt in their hearts, unless their hearts are cut to pieces. (i.e. till they die). And Allah is All- Knowing, All-Wise. (Al-Tawbah 110)

33. Knowledge and Understanding:

Have they not travelled through the land, and have they hearts wherewith to understand, (Al-Hajj 46)

And surely, We have created many of the jinns and mankind for Hell. They have hearts wherewith they understand not, (Al-A’raaf 179)

That is because they believed, then disbelieved, therefore their hearts are sealed, so they understand not. (Al-Munaafiqoon 3)

34. Earning:

Allah will not call you to account for that which is unintentional in your oaths, but He will call you to account for that which your hearts have earned. (Al-Baqarah 225)

35. Inclination:

If you two (wives of the Prophet SAW, namely ‘Aishah and Hafsah radhiallahu’anhu) turn in repentance to Allah, (it will be better for you), your hearts are indeed so inclined (to oppose what the Prophet SAW likes), (Al-Tahreem 4)

36. Guidance:

and whosoever believes in Allah, He guides his heart [to the true Faith with certainty, i.e. what has befallen him was already written for him by Allah from the Qadar (Divine Preordainments)], (Al-Taghaabun 11)
